You can access files on your mobile device even when you have no internet connection by setting up offline access in the Google Drive, Docs, and Sheets apps. You can also edit Google Docs and Google Sheets offline in the Docs and Sheets apps. Note that while all spreadsheets can be viewed offline, only spreadsheets created in the new version of Sheets can be edited offline.
Make a file available offline
You must be connected to the Internet in order to turn on offline access for a file.
There are two ways you can make a file available offline in the Drive, Docs, and Sheets apps:
- Touch the grey i button next to the file (within a file or in the file list) and switch the setting from Off to On next to “Available on this device” in the details panel
- Touch and hold the name of an item for 1-2 seconds. Then, touch Keep on device in the menu that appears.
All offline files can be found in the “On device” section of the left-hand navigation panel in the app.
Remove offline access for a file
To remove offline access for a file, follow either of these steps:
- Touch the grey i button next to the file (within a file or in the file list) and switch the setting from On to Off next to “Available on this device” in the details panel
- Touch and hold the name of an item for 1-2 seconds. Then, touch Remove from device in the menu that appears.
Files you can make available offline
- Google Docs
- Google Sheets
- Google Slides
- Uploaded images
- Files in the following formats: .pdf, .doc, .xls and .ppt
Files you can’t make available offline at this time:
- Google Sites
- Google Drawings
- Google Forms
- Fusion Tables
- Folders
Access offline items
When your Android device loses its Internet connection, you can access your offline items by selecting On device on the left-hand navigation panel of any of the Google Drive, Docs, and Sheets apps.
You can edit Google Docs and Sheets offline in the Docs and Sheets apps, and all changes will be updated online when you restore your Internet connection. For all other files available offline, you can still read, star or rename them.
