EMC has made dramatic pricing and capacity changes to its Syncplicity product after Amazon has entered the market with its Zocalo services.
The news was announced in an EMC blog.
- Syncplicity has an Enterprise Edition ($150/user/year or $12.50/user/month) which now has unlimited storage in the cloud and unlimited storage on-premises if the hybrid cloud approach is used.
- A new Department Edition costs $60/user/year or $5/user/month and has 1TB of cloud storage pooled across a minimum of 25 users, equivalent to 40GB/user at that level.
- The Business Edition costs $60/user per year or $5/user/month with a minimum of three users and 300GB pooled storage plus 5GB/user.
- The Personal Edition is free and provides 10GB per user, up from 2GB. You can pool 100GB across a bunch of personal users for $60/year, $5/month.
- With all editions there is no limit on file size, no bandwidth restrictions and no limitation on the number of devices accessing the service.
EMC has also added a couple of business plan features to its personal edition: annotation of PDFs and editing of Microsoft Office documents on IOS and Android mobile devices.
The news comes after Amazon entered the market with its Zocalo service. Zocalo costs $5/user/month with 200GB capacity per user (pricing details here).
If you are an Amazon Workspaces customer, Zocalo is free with up to 50GB of storage – and thereafter $2/user/month with 200GB of capacity. EMC would no doubt contrast this with its Business Edition’s pooled 300GB capacity plus 5GB/user for an effective $5/user/month and the Department Edition, with its pooled terabyte across 25 users at the effective $5/user/month cost.
But EMC has stopped at giving the Business and Department Edition users 200GB each and Zocalo looks to have a pricing advantage. Box and Dropbox may have to respond with price cuts as well. ®
