Microsoft Warns Windows 10 Update Is Crashing PCs

Windows 10 just made the most important change in its history, but rewriting the update rules matters for nothing if Microsoft has to keep apologising for the quality of the updates themselves. And it has happened again.  Just one week after freezing Windows 10 computers with an earlier update, Microsoft has warned users of serious new problems with another.… Read more

Google Cloud is using Anthos and AutoML to differentiate itself from AWS and Azure

Google Cloud now is now using Anthos and AutoML to differentiate itself from market leaders Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure, chief AI scientist Andrew Moore and product management director Rajen Sheth told VentureBeat. “If I’m running a small business or startup that is depending on the cloud provider’s technology, if I go with Google I can actually sell to customers the ability to run their models on premise, or on GCP, or other clouds, so this huge flexibility helps,” Moore told VentureBeat in a conversation with reporters Thursday.… Read more

The real reason that Microsoft is already testing a 2020 Windows release? Azure

The release earlier this month of a preview Windows 10 build that isn’t due until 2020 was a little strange. At the time, Microsoft said vaguely that it was because of features that “require a longer lead time,” with no indication of what those features are. The well-connected Mary Jo Foley tells a different story: the release is actually a consequence of parts of Windows’ development moving to the Azure group.… Read more

MICROSOFT WANTS TO STOP AI’S ‘RACE TO THE BOTTOM’

“We believe it’s important for governments in 2019 to start adopting laws to regulate” facial-recognition technology, said Microsoft President Brad Smith.STEPHEN MCCARTHY/GETTY IMAGES AFTER A HELLISH year of tech scandals, even government-averse executives have started professing their openness to legislation. But Microsoft president Brad Smith took it one step further on Thursday, asking governments to regulate the use of facial-recognition technology to ensure it does not invade personal privacy or become a tool for discrimination or surveillance.… Read more
